29. Power Plant
Built 1967

This plant replaced a larger one #6 that stood behind it

December 1994.

Christmas 2010

Sleigh riding on the hill by the old power plant Christmas 2010

The red doors on the end is where the coal ash was brought out of the building

The tallest section was for the coal bunker and conveyer system - the windowless brick section in the middle
The middle section of the plant held the boilers and the front part was for the generators

The big door is where the coal was brought in and the far doors were to the Generator Room

The Power House burned one car load of coal a day

Demolished - 2012

One year the coal pile caught fire and burned for continuously for three weeks

The trestle was shortened because if the coal cars were backed to far they would land on the Store House roof

The old power plant used coal that was cinders. The cinders were piled up behind the storehouse (Old Dock) side. They were sold to cinder block companies, like Smithtown Cinder Block Co. Every so often they would put them out on contract and the storehouse would have to weigh the empty trucks and after they were loaded then the storehouse would weigh them again for the price set.
Mr. Lawson (Business Officer) would station a cop at Old Dock road to count the trucks and make sure they went to the scales to be weighed. The new power plant coal was grounded up before burning, so no more cinders. just ashes that were dumped up by the water tower.
After a few years of burning coal, they switched over to oil and gas.
